Barcelona in March: spring arrives, slowly
March marks the shift from winter to spring in Barcelona. Days get longer, temperatures climb out of the winter range, and the city's calendar fills up with everything from a sweets-throwing neighbourhood festival to a marathon and a beer festival.
Crowds are still light compared to the rest of the year, which makes March a good month for visiting the major sights without the queues that build up from April onward.
March weather in Barcelona
March brings milder days and the occasional shower, with daytime highs averaging around 15°C and nights cooling to around 7°C. Pack a light jacket or coat along with layers for warmer afternoons, and comfortable shoes for walking.
Things to do in Barcelona in March
International Women's Day
March 8 is marked in Barcelona with a demonstration that starts at Plaça Universitat and finishes at Parc de la Ciutadella, alongside talks, exhibitions, and other events around the city.
Festa de Sant Medir
The Festa de Sant Medir, a Gràcia tradition dating back to the 19th century, falls on March 3, 2027. A procession of horses, carriages, and walkers makes its way from Gràcia toward the Sant Medir hermitage, throwing sweets to the crowds along the way, around 6 tonnes of them over the course of the day.
Zurich Barcelona Marathon
The Zurich Marató de Barcelona 2027 takes place on March 14. The course runs through the city's best-known neighbourhoods, passing Camp Nou and continuing along Passeig de Gràcia, with Gaudí's Casa Milà and Casa Batlló along the route.
Barcelona-Sitges Vintage Car Rally
Running since 1959, this rally brings together cars and motorcycles built before 1924, with drivers in period dress. The route follows the coast from Barcelona to Sitges along the Garraf coastline.
St. Patrick's Day
St. Patrick's Day in Barcelona is marked with parades, live Irish music, and green-clad crowds at Irish pubs around the city, including Michael Collins and Flaherty's.
Comic Fest
Barcelona's Comic Fest, running since the 1980s, takes over the city in early March with cosplay, panels, and international comic creators signing autographs and meeting fans.
Hop-on hop-off bus
The tourist bus runs two routes, Red and Blue, covering around forty stops including the Sagrada Família, Park Güell, and the Gothic Quarter, on open-top double-decker buses.
Barcelona Beer Festival
The Barcelona Beer Festival 2027 runs March 22-24, with breweries from across Europe pouring more than 350 craft beers, alongside tastings, award ceremonies, and brewing workshops.
Sagrada Família
The Sagrada Família's facades tell different parts of the story of Christ's life, and inside, tree-like columns and stained glass fill the nave with colour. March's lighter crowds make it a good month to visit.
Bike tour
A bike tour is an easy way to cover the Gothic Quarter's medieval streets and Gaudí's buildings, including the Sagrada Família, with a local guide pointing out details you'd otherwise miss.
Flamenco
Flamenco originated in Andalusia, but Barcelona has venues ranging from small tablaos to larger theatres where you can catch guitarists, singers, and dancers performing live.
Girona day trip
Girona is a short trip from Barcelona, with medieval walls, the narrow lanes of the old Jewish Quarter, and colourful houses along the Onyar River. The Gothic cathedral, with its single-nave design, also appeared as a filming location in "Game of Thrones."
La Rambla
La Rambla runs about 1.2 kilometres through the centre of the city, lined with flower stalls, street performers, cafés, and shops. It's busy year-round, but March crowds are lighter than in summer.
Palau Güell
The Palau Güell is an early Gaudí building, with ironwork and chimneys that hint at his later style. Inside, the stables, living quarters, and staff areas show how the building was actually used. It's a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Visiting Barcelona in March
March combines mild spring weather with a packed events calendar: Sant Medir's sweet-throwing procession, the Zurich Barcelona Marathon, St. Patrick's Day, and the Barcelona Beer Festival all happen this month.
With crowds still well below peak season, it's a good time to take in the Sagrada Família, Park Güell, and Palau Güell at a relaxed pace before spring brings more visitors.
