Barcelona in late October has a particular pull. The summer crowds have thinned, the terraces feel like themselves again, and in the Gothic Quarter on a Saturday night, live jazz rises from a vaulted stone basement at Plaça Reial with a warmth that stops you mid-street. Now in its 58th edition, the Voll-Damm Barcelona Jazz Festival runs from October 2026 to April 2027, with the richest programme for music lovers concentrated in October, November and December. More than 100 concerts span the city's finest concert halls and jazz clubs, from the Palau de la Música Catalana in the Sant Pere neighbourhood to intimate venues deep in the city centre.
What Is the Barcelona International Jazz Festival?
The first edition opened on 3 November 1966 with the Dave Brubeck Quartet at the Palau de la Música Catalana. That year's programme also featured Sonny Rollins, Stan Getz, and Astrud Gilberto, a lineup that for a first edition was almost impossibly strong. The festival was not held in 1977, 1978, or 1979 during Spain's democratic transition, which is why the 2026 edition is the 58th despite the festival being nearly 60 years old.
Today the Barcelona jazz festival spans more than a dozen venues, mixing Catalan and Spanish artists with international headliners across the city's music scene. The 2026 edition opens the 60th anniversary celebrations, which continue through 2028. Alongside live concerts, the programme includes master classes, exhibitions, and artist conferences.
October and November 2026: Jazz Festival in Barcelona

Every year on 26 April, International Jazz Day, a stretch of Passeig de Gràcia between Gran Via and Plaça de Catalunya closes to traffic and becomes an open-air jazz stage. In 2026 it hosted six back-to-back concerts from noon to 10pm, with Andrea Motis performing in the shadow of Gaudí's Casa Batlló. The programme has called it the most beautiful jazz club in the world. No ticket needed.

Jamboree: The Jazz Club at the Heart of Barcelona's Jazz Scene
Opened in 1960 by entrepreneur Joan Rosselló, who converted a bar called Brindis at Plaça Reial 17 into the oldest jazz venue in Spain, Jamboree placed Barcelona on the international jazz circuit long before the festival began. Chet Baker, Ornette Coleman, and Dexter Gordon all played in that stone cellar. Miles Davis appeared at the festival in 1989. Plaça Reial on a Saturday night still carries something of that charge.

During Spain's Franco dictatorship, jazz occupied an ambiguous position in Barcelona: not officially banned, but viewed as something foreign and culturally suspect. Jamboree became one of the few spaces where the city's intellectuals and American sailors from the US Mediterranean Fleet sat at the same tables, the music providing a kind of informal freedom the streets above did not permit.
