Your flight leaves at 6:40, the alarm is set for 4:15, and the last thing you want is a 30-minute taxi from the city centre in the dark. That is when a hotel near Madrid airport earns its keep: ten minutes of sleep feels worth more than any rooftop view. The good news is that Madrid-Barajas has dozens of airport hotels within a few kilometres of the terminals. The less good news is that plenty of listings promise a free airport shuttle the hotel does not actually run.
I have sorted out the ones worth booking. Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas, Spain's busiest airport, has two separate terminal areas (T1, T2 and T3 in one building, Terminal 4 and T4S a few kilometres north), and the old village of Barajas sits in between. These are the 12 hotels I would recommend to a friend, with the honest shuttle situation for each one.
Where to stay near Madrid-Barajas airport
Airport hotels here fall into three groups, and picking the right one matters more than the star rating. Barajas village, on Avenida General and Avenida de Logroño, is the closest to the terminals and the only area with real streets, bars and a plaza to walk to. Hotels on the Avenida de Aragón, along the A-2 motorway to the south, are bigger and often cheaper, but they are motorway hotels: you eat on-site. And around Alameda de Osuna and Campo de las Naciones, towards IFEMA, you find the larger 4-star properties with the best amenities.
Before you book, check which terminal your airline uses. Iberia, British Airways and the other oneworld airlines fly from Terminal 4, and most other carriers use T1, T2 or T3. Barajas village is between the two, on Metro Line 8, with the Barajas metro station one stop from Aeropuerto T1-T2-T3 and one stop from Aeropuerto T4.
Local tip
An airport-hotel night does not have to mean a sad buffet. Barajas was its own village until Madrid absorbed it in 1949, and the arcaded Plaza Mayor de Barajas still has terraces where you can eat tapas with locals, ten minutes from the terminals. If your hotel is on Avenida General or Avenida de Logroño, walk over for dinner.
One more thing most guides miss: the Madrid metro does not start running until 6am. For any flight before 8am, choose a hotel with a shuttle that starts earlier, or plan on a taxi.

Best hotels near Madrid airport with an airport shuttle
I have grouped them by area and by what they do well. The first four are in Barajas, and they are the ones I would book for an early flight.
Best for Early Flights
Meliá Barajas
If I had a 7am flight out of Madrid, this is where I would sleep. Meliá Barajas runs a complimentary airport shuttle to T1, T2 and T4 from around 4:30 in the morning until late at night, so even the first wave of departures is covered. The rooms are comfortable, and there is an outdoor pool for summer evenings when your flight is delayed and you would rather be in the water than at the gate. Barajas village and its Plaza Mayor are a short walk away for dinner.
Hotel Madrid Alameda Aeropuerto, affiliated by Meliá
Meliá Barajas's sister hotel, a little further along the same avenue, and my pick for a really early flight. The free airport shuttle starts before dawn, and the hotel serves an early breakfast from 3am, which is the kind of detail you only appreciate when your alarm goes off at 3:15. The rooms are big, and there is an outdoor pool. Book the shuttle at the front desk when you check in so you know exactly which run you are on.
Hotel Clement Barajas
The best hotel in Barajas village itself, with modern rooms and a properly quiet night's sleep. One thing every listing glosses over: Clement Barajas does not run an airport shuttle. The hotel suggests a ride-hailing app or a taxi, which is a short, cheap hop to the terminals, or the metro from Barajas station, a 7-minute walk away and one stop from either airport station. In return you get the best location for an evening out, with the old village square on your doorstep.
Tach Madrid Airport
Tach sits on the northern edge of Barajas, which puts it roughly halfway between T1-T3 and Terminal 4, a handy spot if you are flying Iberia or another oneworld airline out of T4. It is run by the same group as the Clement, and the rooms are modern and plain in a good way. The hotel advertises a free airport shuttle that runs most of the day but not between 1am and 4am. It does not always run to schedule, so confirm with reception before you rely on it for a dawn departure.
Top Hotels With the Most Amenities
Hilton Madrid Airport
The big international name on this list, and the one with the most reliable shuttle. The Hilton Madrid Airport bus is free and runs every 20 to 25 minutes from 5am until midnight, stopping at T1, T2-T3 and Terminal 4. Add a year-round pool, a gym and the full Hilton breakfast and it is the easy choice for families or anyone with points to burn. It sits between the airport and IFEMA, so it also works if you have a day at the Feria de Madrid before you fly.
Hotel Maydrit Airport
Maydrit is my top pick near Madrid airport, and the place I'd choose for the last night of a Spain trip. The shuttle works on request: call the hotel once you have your bags and they send the next bus, then book your return run at reception. The ride from the airport is complimentary, while the trip back to the terminal carries a small charge per person. Ask the front desk about the current shuttle times when you book.
Madrid Marriott Auditorium Hotel & Conference Center
A very big hotel built around a conference centre, so it often still has rooms when the smaller airport hotels are sold out. The free airport shuttle leaves every 30 minutes from 5am until after midnight, and a second shuttle runs to the Plenilunio shopping centre nearby if you need to kill a few hours. It runs smoothly for a hotel this size. It is on the A-2 motorway, so plan to eat in rather than wander out for dinner.
Hotel Nuevo Boston
Nuevo Boston is the good-value 4-star with a free airport shuttle around the clock. Runs to the airport leave on the hour (reserve your seat at reception or during online check-in), and from the terminals you call or message the hotel for a pick-up. Waits can stretch at busy times, so leave a margin. My guests like it for the value, and the outdoor pool is a real treat in a Madrid summer. Like the Marriott it sits on the Avenida de Aragón, so dinner is on-site.
Budget hotels near Madrid airport
Best Value Picks
Holiday Inn Express Madrid Airport
The IHG option, and a dependable one: breakfast included (with a light early-bird version from 4am), and the Holiday Inn Express formula of comfortable beds, a decent shower and free Wi-Fi. The airport shuttle is not free here. It runs at set times in the early morning and evening, costs extra and needs booking in advance, so check the schedule against your flight. A good pick for a family-friendly, no-surprises night, especially if you collect IHG points.
Hostelfly Madrid Airport
The most popular place to stay in this guide, and for good reason. Hostelfly is a modern hostel in Barajas with shared rooms that have their own bathrooms, aimed squarely at travellers between flights, and it is the cheapest bed in this guide that still feels clean and well run. From the door it is about a 10-minute walk to the Barajas metro stop, then one stop to either airport station. For a solo traveller with a long layover, this is the obvious call.
ibis Madrid Aeropuerto Barajas
Simple, compact rooms and a 24-hour front desk: the ibis does exactly what you expect. It sits on the same street as the Clement, close to Barajas village, and like the Clement it has no airport shuttle, whatever older listings may say. A taxi to the terminals is a few minutes, and the metro is about 10 minutes on foot. Do not confuse it with the ibis budget Madrid Aeropuerto, a different hotel out on the A-2.
Is there a hotel inside Madrid airport?
Yes, one, in Terminal 4. If you are connecting between two international flights and do not want to pass through passport control, there are also sleep capsules airside in T4S, on the other side of security, which you can book by the hour.
Air Rooms Madrid by HelloSky
The only hotel actually inside Madrid-Barajas airport. Air Rooms has 22 rooms on floor -1 of Terminal 4, in the public area before security, so you can walk from your room to check-in in minutes. Each room has a private bathroom and Wi-Fi. Rooms are compact, because here you pay for the location rather than the space, and for an early T4 flight that is exactly the point. Flying from T1, T2 or T3 instead? The free inter-terminal bus runs around the clock.
Which hotels near Madrid airport have a free airport shuttle?
Fewer than you would think from the listings. Shuttle details change, so treat this as a starting point and confirm times with the hotel when you book.

Airport hotel or Madrid city centre?
Stay near the airport for the night you land late or the night before an early flight. For anything longer, stay in the centre: Madrid is far too good to see from the A-2. Metro Line 8 runs from the airport to Nuevos Ministerios, where you change for the rest of the network, and the Airport Express bus runs around the clock to Cibeles, continuing to Atocha station during the day. Our Madrid airport to city centre guide compares every option, and if you land after midnight, read getting from the airport at night.
A smart split for a longer trip: a night at an airport hotel on arrival if you land late, then move into one of the hotels near Madrid city centre, and come back out to Barajas for your last night. Our guide to where to stay in Madrid compares the neighbourhoods.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a hotel within walking distance of Madrid airport?
Not quite door to door, unless you count Air Rooms inside Terminal 4. The hotels in Barajas village, such as Hotel Clement Barajas, the ibis and Hotel Don Luis on Avenida General, are close enough that some travellers walk to T1-T3 in around 20 minutes, but the route runs along busy roads. With luggage, a short taxi ride or the shuttle is the better plan.
Can I stay overnight inside Madrid airport?
Yes. Air Rooms by HelloSky has 22 rooms in the public area of Terminal 4, and there are bookable sleep capsules airside in T4S for transit passengers. The terminals stay open overnight, but the seats are not built for sleeping, so a room is worth it if you have more than a few hours.
Which hotel is best for Terminal 4?
Air Rooms is inside the terminal itself. Otherwise, Tach Madrid Airport is the closest hotel in this guide to T4, and the Barajas village hotels are one metro stop from Aeropuerto T4. Meliá Barajas and the Hilton both include T4 on their shuttle routes.
How long does it take from Madrid airport to the city centre?
Plan on around 30 to 40 minutes by metro, bus or taxi, depending on traffic and where you are going. That is why an airport hotel makes sense for an early flight: from Barajas village you are 5 minutes from the terminals instead.
